r. marie glidden's Bio

I grew up in a small town in central Maine, about 4-5000 people. The maine street consists of both sides of the road under a canopy of large Oak trees, three schools, a couple of mom and pop stores, homes of people within the community, a pizza/deli shop, a fire station and one blinking red stop light. A world away from San Antonio, but none the less, home sweet home for me.

I became interested in painting at the age of twenty two when I was looking for a way to express with a visual image how I was feeling. Everything and everyone around me became part of my artwork. Inspiration came from every inch of my surroundings and I found myself evolving within my thought process with each painting. I was inspired by this new world around me, new sights and sounds. I am still inspired by many of the same things that I first was but I have found that following your instincts of passion within the heat of a moment on canvas can be absolutely ravenous!

I paint one of a kind artworks in many styles. I let each painting paint itself in a way, by following intution and instinct. I will have a color or thought in mind and then just follow that. Each piece is unique and offers a look into another aspect of human desires and emotions. I paint with both oil and acrylic on canvas, some of which are hand stretched. I am a self taught artist, what the art world likes to tag as an outsider artist (non traditional with no formal training.) I feel that although training can get you a  ways in the art world, I think that it also forces you to paint only what people like. I feel that being a self taught artist that, that gives me an edge in my approach to creativity within my work. I paint because I want to. I paint what I want because I am not afraid to approach and conquer my hopes, dreams and fears within my artwork. I paint with a lot of emotion, a lot of gusto. Though I do applaud those that further their careers in art through schooling and have high hopes for them. But for myself the non traditional works for me right now. But I do love to learn from other artists all about their work, their techniques and what inspires them to create.

One of my goals with painting is continously reach new heights with what I can do as an artist. I am inspired yet once more with each painting that I do.

Update:   (June 18, 2009)          .............Look forward to.....

Alright ya'll, my next rise of paintings will center around the ideas of Instinct and Intuition-I am just starting to come up with some possible creations for that-keep your eyes posted for when those come out. Also, I just became a member of SAVA-San Antonio Visual Artists (looking forward to meeting a lot of other great Bexar county artists). Also, I am scoping out places to show my work in here in town too, so if any of ya'll have some ideas let me know. Feel free to leave me a comment about the where or just email me the information.  Looking forward to hearing from everyone!
